In a recent article in the Courier Mail, it was reported that more than 266k Queensland drivers licences were cancelled in 5 years due to an accumulation of demerit points, with more than 60k licences lost in the last year. Thats about 166 per day in the last 12 months. GC Traffic Lawyers, a Lawyer Gold Coast, are specialists in helping people in these situations attain a Special Hardship Licence.

Police lowered the tolerances for speeding offences in September last year, however even before that the figures were on the up with cancellations in the previous financial year higher than the year before. People who rely on their licence for their livelihood were not spared, with more than 6,800 truck drivers and 253 taxi drivers losing their licence in the same period.

Data also shows that magistrates are issuing fewer Work Licences despite more drivers being caught ignoring road rules. A Queensland Police spokesman said fewer taxi drivers and truck drivers were being pinged.

“People who are dependent on their licence for work purposes and who do not drive with due diligence should take responsibility for their driving behaviour,’’ he said.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson said he had little compassion for irresponsible drivers but acknowledged the importance of being able to apply for restricted licences.

“If a person needs to drive for their job and they lose their licence, I believe it is appropriate to have an avenue whereby people can apply for a work licence, however we have strict eligibility requirements in place,’’ he said.

“The simple message to all drivers is if you do the wrong thing and don’t obey the road rules, you risk losing your licence, or worse.”
